Denied by her school’s boys hoops team, girl gets call from the pros
Sydney Phillips is going to the pros.
The seventh-grader, who was denied a chance to play on her school’s boys basketball team, will practice with the New York Liberty professional women’s team. She also received an invitation to a meet the Fordham University women’s team at one of their games.
“She did find a team,” Phillips father, Scott Phillips, said of the offer his daughter received from the university.
Phillips said the Liberty invited Sydney, who attends St. Theresa’s School in Kenilworth, to watch a practice session and work out with two players from the team. Sydney will bring a few other girls she knows who play basketball.
